By Captain Matthew Thews
April 14, 2014

On Monday April 14th as units were returning from the woods fire in Thurmont, Co. 25 was alerted for an investigation in the area of Route 80 and Prices Distillery Road. ECC began receiving multiple reports of a large thick column of black smoke coming from an address on Prices Distillery Road. As ET254 pulled down the driveway the officer noticed what appeared to be a large garage on fire. ET254 requested the structure assignment to be filled with two brush trucks to assist. E152(FF Lawson), B156(FF Kohanyi), and D15(Lt. Williamson) were in the area and were added to the call with 8 volunteers. ET254 arrived and found several large piles of debris and an area of woods on fire. They stretched a line and began to attack the fire. ET254 additionally asked for the box alarm to be filled and established command. RE153(Capt. Pryce), U15(Sgt. Hanagan), and C15-2(AFC Betts) responded on the box with 8 additional personnel. E152 arrived and split layed down the driveway, with E709 completing the 2100' lay. Brush units from 15, 25, and MC9 worked to extinguish the advancing brush fire. A total of two handlines were stretched to the debris piles and to protect the exposed garage building. D15 & BAT705 held the water supply, with a tanker dump site set up at the end of the driveway and a fill site set up be E231. It took crews almost an hour to extinguish the debris, which turned out to be burning scrap tires. Crews were assisted by the homeowner who utilized a loader to pile dirt on the tires and to cut a fire line. CAFS Foam was utilized from HCE41 to put a final knock on the flames. Crews cleared after about 90 minutes.
